Classes: The Technician Class scheduled for  - Saturday August 6th and  Sunday August 7th has been cancelled due to not enough pariticipants

FLARC Annual Fox Hunt – Tuesday August 16, 2022 7pm

This will be a driving hunt (no on-foot component).

 

The start point is the east end of the parking lot at 401 Charmany Lane.  The transmitter will be somewhere within an eight-mile radius of the start point.

 

We will be transmitting fifteen consecutive seconds of every minute, on 146.565 MHz FM, until all teams have found us, or 9pm, whichever comes first.  After the conclusion of the hunt, we will adjourn to a nearby Culver's for frozen custard and the customary swapping of lies.

 

If you have room for passengers in your vehicle, or wish to be a passenger in somebody else's vehicle, then please arrive at the start point around 6:30 to allow time to sort that out, or make arrangements beforehand.

Nominations for 2022 FLARC Board of Directors -nominations were completed and approved. Jeff KC9UNZ will obtain the completed ballot from Carolyn NQ9A . Andy AC9CB  will send the list of current FLARC members to Jeff KC9UNZ. Thomas-AB1YW- Thomas successfully borrowed Nicholas’ antenna for his trip to his parents’ place back in Maine, achieving 2 DX (Canada - POTA activators, French Guiana - TO60CNES special event), POTA Silver Hunter award (20 entities hunted), and POTA New Year hunter award (contact an entity in the first week of the UTC year, done at 2022-01-01 0024Z). For a total of 31 logged contacts at 5W from his FT-818nd.

Jeff KC9UNZ-   Jeff, KC9UNZ has set up a Remote RF Linked Repeater with the MARA 147.150 repeater. Internet is not available at the WMTV repeater site and Yaesu provides a way for a remote node to provide internet connectivity for an otherwise unconnected Fusion Repeater. You are invited to connect and experiment with WIRES-X connectivity. Since it is operating in an FM Mode (Not digital) you do not need a WIRES-X radio to connect. The only requirement is a radio that will generate DTMF signals. Please announce that you will be testing WIRES-X so other users are not surprised by the DTMF tones and please read the notes at https://w9hsy.org/2022/01/14/wires-x-testing-underway/ for further information. Please drop a note to kc9unz@arrl.net if they are having any trouble or to let us know how it worked for them

 Treasurers’ report from  Andy AC9CB  :Andy presented the budget for 2022 and it will be voted on to be approved at the next month at the Dec.21, 2021 meeting .FLARC account balance : $6499.66 .Recent transactions include  dues received.

David- Manning  KD9TRV: David  recently started hiking/backpacking and intends to use his  newly acquired technician license and  equipment for communications while on the trail., and asked members to share any suggestions that would help him get started with doing this

1)Christmas Party – It was announced that the board voted that we would not have a Christmas party this year due to continuing high  numbers of Covid-19 infections, and hospitals are operating at near capacity .

2) “Special optional attire “ for the December 21, 2021 meeting -in honor of the holiday season members are invited to wear silly hats, or ugly sweaters during the Zoom meeting

3)Reminder for quorums needed at the next two meetings. - -A membership quorum will be needed at the Dec.21,2021 meeting  to vote on the budget and  one will also be needed at the January 18,2022 meeting to vote for the Board of Directors for 2022.  Members asked to attend if they can to help meet the quorum.

Tom W9TDP  got his start in amateur radio through public service. He was a cyclist on bike trips that utilized ham radio operators for communications. He got to know the ham radio operators, then got his ham radio license, then started to participate in the public service events.

Public service events include bike rides, and running events. . Ham radio operators participate by operating as Net control in  SAG vehicles transporting riders who are having bicycle or physical problems be transported . They operate at food rest stops, water stops, they can be a bike mobile, and they can operate, as net control. Radio Equipment is provided if the radio operator does not have their own.  Repeaters are used and in some cases simplex also.

Ham radio communication are key in effective communications in bike course terrain that is very hilly where mobile phone communication would not be reliable. They provide communication using an organized traffic net with a net control, Communication is transmitted to all areas of the event simultaneously so everyone can hear..

  • Bike the Barns
  • Chicago Marathon

Parks on the Air

  • Thomas AC9BJ and Carolyn NQ9A participated in Parks on the Air and Wisconsin Parks on the Air in September 2019 activating Blue Mounds State Park.
  • Thomas AB1YW is currently looking at POTA locations-specifically trails south of t Madison. He mentioned there is a wiki collaboration in process that will provide resources and support to find new park sites for POTA
  • Nick N9STF did a POTA activation at Glacier National Park

Hamfests:

Winlink Communication on a road trip:

Jeff KC9UNZ - took a driving trip to Colorado and used Winlink successfully  to send and receive messages. He also briefly discussed Winlink use and AREDN for ARES/RACES.

  • Jeff KC9UNZ- announced the 2021 Wisconsin ARES/RACES Conference is online this year on  Saturday Nov. 13th , 2021.
