Imagine. Communicating across town and around the world with no contracts, no overages or long distance charges.
Imagine. No annoying network is busy messages in an emergency.
Amateur radio has been providing that capability for over 100 years and is still going strong.
For 24 hours starting at 1:00PM on Saturday June 24 the Four Lakes Amateur Radio Club of Madison will join Amateurs around North American to demonstrate the capabilities, value and fun of Amateur Radio, even in this age of Cell Phones, WiFi and Satellites.
All over North America Amateur Radio operators practice Emergency Preparedness by setting up radios, antennas and power, “off the grid,” to practice the ability to provide communications in an emergency. We do this to hone our skills so, in case we have to do so in an emergency, we already know how.
We do this to demonstrate to the public that this capability exists in our area. And we set up in a public place so you can learn about Amateur Radio, listen in and if you are brave take a turn at the dial.
And since we’ve got all this equipment up and running for a full day, we make a contest out of it. We contact as many stations, in as many ways and in as many places as possible.
This year we are setting up at the The Cambridge Area EMS Station at 271 W Main St in Cambridge, WI.
So come on down and take a look. Amateur Radio is not just something your Grandfather did, it is alive and growing today.
